Retrospective #11: At The Quinte Hotel, at OBERON

Org: Intoxication brings together visual and performance artists to riff on the theme of inebriation, on April 20th.

Late last week we got some great news from a musician and event producer who is putting on an event in Boston. Singer Mali, of pop ensemble Jaggery, requested that one of our short films, At the Quinte Hotel, be screened at a multimedia event entitled Org: Intoxication in a couple of weeks. We of course said yes!

Bringing together performing and visual artists to riff on the theme of inebriation, Org: Intoxication, will be the third in the Org series put on at OBERON, a stage of the American Repertory Theater, a destination for theater and nightlife on the fringe of Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA. We’re very excited to be a part of it!

Org: Intoxication aims to “exhilarate and stupefy as if by liquor”. Enter the hookah bar of your imagination, [...]

Retrospective #10: Fun! With Ruff Ruffman

Last week, I (re)introduced you to Ruff Ruffman from the 5 season-long PBS show Fetch! With Ruff Ruffman. I promised I’d go on a hunt for some “making-of” footage from when the Global Mechanic crew (Bruce, Andrew, Cliff, and Chez) worked on the show. This week, to keep my word, I present to you…

Meet Murray, the live action star of Season 1 & 2 – and loyal dog of a WGBH's staff member

What a cool dog. But not cooler than Ruff, right?

Just havin' a lil fun

Retrospective #9: Meet Ruff Ruffman!

After some rumination on the state of the artistic process in our previous #GMretrospective entries, I thought we’d try on something a little “lighter” for size – by reminiscing about our old friend, Ruff Ruffman.

Meet Ruff Ruffman!

Ruff Ruffman is an anthropomorphic dog and host of PBS’s realty TV game show, Fetch! With Ruff Ruffman. Bruce designed the character and under Cliff‘s direction, Global Mechanic did the animations for each episode of the 5 seasons the show was aired. I spoke to Cliff to get a bit of a back story on how it all went down. It happened like this:

In 2005, our studio got the bid to produce 20 episodes of 6 minutes each after the WGBH loved Bruce’s character designs. Deciding to take a risk with a smaller animation studio by the name of Global Mechanic (then, our studio was still young!), the WGBH gave the team a [...]

Retrospective #8: Through Lenses of Time

This week, we thought we’d take a step away from the projects we have created, and instead, have a look at how the technology we use is changing.

This morning Michael told me about a nifty new camera, which really got me thinking about how photography has come a long way in terms of hardware – and software.

I looked around our office and captured some shots of the many vintage (video) cameras we have here on display – for posterity’s sake. They’re oldies but goodies! Have a look:

Technology in the field of photography and motion capture has made the capturing of light equivocal to capturing data. And we’re definitely turning into data nerds, so it’s no surprise how far technology has come. We don’t even need [...]
